Vegan Conservatives are lending their support to the campaign to stop using real fur in Queen's Guard caps. The campaign aims to end the shooting of bears in Canada to provide fur for the traditional hats, using instead a fan fur alternative, which has the same look and feel but without the cruelty. Faux fur hats have the additional advantage of being waterproof.
Each bear fur cap costs the MoD £1,305 and at least one faux fur manufacturer has offered to provide the MoD with faux bear fur free of charge until 2030.
In recent years, the campaign has attracted celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Stella McCartney, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley, and the late Sir Roger Moore. Campaign group PETA has also recently recruited Ricky Whittle, Lucy Davies and Kate Ford.
Boris Johnson has also indicated his support in the past.
